Blog Post #4: Editing Begins!

Today is Friday, May 19th, making it the 8th day of our Hawken project. Time for another recap of what we've been working on!

Wednesday

Wednesday was mostly dedicated to being a big recording day. We had three people record, which rounded out all of the voices for episodes one and two. Recording went as usual, which is to say rather smoothly. We continue to use the same setup, recording in the closet by the library. Overall, recording has definitely gotten better throughout the project, with more understanding of what it actually means for a recording to be good. One really big lesson we learned, especially after we started editing, is that "marks" between takes are really useful. A mark is just when someone makes a loud sound, for us usually a clap, so that it makes a peak on the waveform that is really easy to identify while editing. That's something we'll certainly apply to the later recording sessions to make sure we have that for all of our audio. Other than recording, we did a bit more writing, and generally discussed future plans and goals.

Thursday

Thursday was mostly dedicated to beginning editing the first two episodes, with Luke working on the audio from episode one and me working on the audio from episode two. Thursday was one of the days when we really learned the most, because neither of us had really edited any audio before. The main tasks in the editing were first, going through and separating lines, since the original recordings were just one long recording with lots of noise that wasn't actually part of the episode, like acting directions and such. Also on Thursday, we rerecorded some audio for one of the episode one characters who we thought needed a bit more emotion.

Plans moving forward

The plan moving forward is much the same as it was. Today (Friday) we've been finishing up editing the first two episodes. Still on the agenda is recording our theme music and finalizing scripts for episodes three and four. The main bottlenecks right now are that editing is a lot more time intensive than we first realized, and we're a little bit behind in terms of writing episodes three and four.
