Blog Post #3: For The Record

Hello again! Welcome back. Today is Tuesday, May 16th, making it the 5th day of our Hawken Project. It's been a busy couple of days. This week marked the beginning of recording lines for the podcast.

Monday

Monday was quite the busy one. The first order of business was meeting with our mentor, Jim Harold, to discuss the project and first steps of production. This meeting was unbelievably useful, as Mr. Harold is very knowledgeable on the fine details of podcast production and gave a lot of valuable advice and feedback for us before we began recording. After that, we of course, began recording! Our first recording session was for a character in episode two that I voiced. This gave us a good opportunity to figure out our recording setup before bringing other people in to record their lines. In addition to this first recording, we recorded lines for two of the characters in episode one, voiced by fellow classmates. Also on Monday, besides all these recording sessions, we spent a lot of time scheduling other people for voices for episodes one and two. Big lessons from Monday were that audition is probably the best software to use for recording and editing, that the most important thing when recording is to make sure that dialogue isn't getting distorted, since it's nearly impossible to fix, and that the easiest way to record is to have people run through the whole script at once rather than to go line by line.

Tuesday

Tuesday was another rather recording focused day, which will stay true most of this week. We had two recording sessions today, as well as one follow up from Monday's recording. Both of the new recordings on Tuesday were for characters in episode two. Other than recording, we continued to schedule people for more recording sessions, particularly for Wednesday. Tuesday was also a rather writing intensive day, with work continuing on the drafts for episodes three and four. We hope to have the scripts for both those episodes done by the end of the week so that we can begin recording next week.

All in all, production continues to move along at a nice pace. As long as we can keep this up, it seems quite possible that we'll end up with our goal of 5 episodes. Until then, we'll keep on writing, recording, and editing.

  1. Jackson, wow, it sounds like you and Luke are on a roll, and are on track to finish your five podcast episodes. Quick question...before you and Luke started writing the podcast episodes did you decide on the storyline and the characters so that episode 1 would flow nicely into episode 2? You also mentioned that your mentor, Jim Harold, gave you and Luke some advice. I'd love to know how he guided you. I love that you are bringing in other voices into your podcast, and I can't wait to hear an episode or two! How are you planning to publish them? Are you planning to release one episode at a time or are you going to release all five at once? Keep up the great job at describing your experiences! -Mrs. Mullen
