Blog Post #1: Introduction
Hello. Thanks for stopping by my blog. My name’s Jackson, and the following blog is a record of my work on my 2023 Hawken project. The project I am working on is writing and producing a fictional sci-fi horror anthology series with one of my classmates, Luke Sweeney. We’re aiming to create 5 episodes that are each about 15 to 30 minutes in length. The podcast will be an anthology, meaning that while all of the stories will take place in the same universe and are somewhat interconnected, each of the stories has its own plot with its own characters. The production goal of the project is to create 5 podcast episodes, but the real goal is to answer an essential question: what does it take to write and produce a podcast? I’ve been an avid podcast listener for quite some time, and more recently have greatly enjoyed listening to fiction podcasts with their own worlds and stories. For quite some time, I’ve wanted to try my hand at creating a podcast, and a Hawken project is the perfect time to do it. I’m really excited for this project; it brings together lots of things I really enjoy, both new and old. It’s about podcasts, which of course I’ve listened to for quite some time, as well as some technical aspects like publishing, as well as some things that are newer to me and that I want to practice more, like creative writing. I think that the biggest challenge of this project is going to be producing audio that really sounds professional. It’s something I’ve just never really tried to do before, and I’m really excited to jump in. It’s also helpful that we have access to pretty good recording equipment. The part of the project I’m most excited for is getting to build and flesh out the world of our podcast.
Jackson, your project sounds exciting! I hope the first couple of days have gone well for you and Luke. I also love listening to podcasts, however, I mostly listen to podcasts that are fact-based or news-related. My kids and I have actually started listening to podcasts together in the car, and it's something that we now like to do together. I love that you have a specific goal to create 5 podcast episodes AND that you have an essential question to guide you both. I look forward to hearing more about your creative process and how you collaborate with Luke to work on this project. Frequent input from your mentor also will be key. After all, that's what your mentor is for! :) -Mrs. Mullen
